When I am at work I overhear a lot of things. Parents yelling at their children, dads sighing because they have to shop again, Employees of the host store bickering back and forth. Most times I ignore it and go about my tasks. Well one particular host store employee is rather loud and it is hard to ignore them. One of the other host store employees wasnt paying attention to documents they were supposed to read. Instead of having them read it again, or simply explaining it again. No this person had to rather loudly refer to the other as a “Retard”. I don’t know when or how this word became an okay use of calling someone stupid. However why should any of us call another person Stupid let alone say they are a “Retard”. Now I have before used that term about things and people. I am ashamed of ever using that word. It really isn’t something that should be used. Retard shouldn’t even be used to explain a mental condition. But it is. Its a term we labeled for those who are slower than most of us. What amazed me the most about this incident today is that they said it loudly enough that I could hear it a ways away. Which means so can others. I wish this was not a word we label with people who are different but it is and it is very offensive to them and to others who believe that words do hurt.
